Course Overview

*This is the fourth of seven Intensive Course sessions, and can be purchased individually or as part of the Full Bundle. Sessions 1 & 2 are recommended prerequisites for subsequent sessions


Presenter: Ian Caton

In this session, native plant authority Ian Caton will examine plants of the open landscape that exemplify the ecological characteristics described by Larry Weaner in previous sessions. His presentation will span the successional period from herbaceous meadow, to mixed woody/ herbaceous old field, to the ecologically important but often neglected clonal shrub thicket. He will also present a group of “workhorse” native species for the sunlit landscape that combine reliability and weed suppression with attractive aesthetic character.

Attendees will receive a 100+ page, login-protected course manual.

Applicable Regions: Eastern and Midwestern U.S. (Florida excluded).

Note: This course will have some repeated information from previous intensive design short courses.

Instructor

Ian Caton worked for Larry Weaner Landscape Associates from 2001 to 2013, and now serves as a project consultant for the firm. His knowledge of native plants and their characteristics is encyclopedic. He is also the founding principal of Wood Thrush Native Nursery in Floyd, VA. Ian has designed and installed landscapes for a wide range of residential, commercial, and public settings. Prior speaking engagements include the Irvine Native Plant Symposium and events at the New York Botanical Garden and Bowman’s Hill Wildflower Preserve.

  • Recording: Will this course be recorded for me to view later? Do I have to attend the live session in order to access the recording?

    The entire course will be recorded and available (not downloadable) to all registrants after the live session ends for three (3) months. If you are registered, you do not need to attend the live session in order to access the recording.

  • Recording: Can I purchase only the recording later?

    You can register for 3 months past the live session date, and access the materials - including the recording - until that point.

  • Continuing Education Units (CEUs): Can I get CEUs for taking this course?

    This course has been approved for 3 CEUs for the following organizations: APLD, LA CES, NOFA, & SER.

  • Continuing Education Units (CEUs): How do I receive the CEUs?

    Please ensure that your Portal profile indicates the type of CEUs you're seeking. If you make any changes to the CEU field of your profile, please email [email protected] to let us know. || As this is considered a live course, those seeking LA CES CEUs must watch the session and complete the quiz on the Portal by *two weeks* after the live session date.
